Our guide to lighting your wood-burning or multi-fuel stove
Here at North Wales Stoves, we endeavour to bring you the best advice around. Once your wood-burning or multi-fuel stove is fitted and you are ready to get cosy in-front of it, how do you ensure that you light your fuel safely and burn it efficiently?
This guide to lighting your wood-burning or multi-fuel stove takes you through the steps needed to achieve the safest and most efficient burn from your stove. Follow the advice below and make the most of the cosy days and nights in-front of your dream stove.
Read through your appliances user guide and keep it to hand until you are familiar with it. Once you are confident with how to use your stove, keep the guide in a safe place for ease of reference when needed.
Gather the items you will need – a long fire-lighter such as a barbecue lighter, some fire-lighters (never use newspaper as the heated printing ink will stain your glass viewing window), a small amount of dry kindling wood and several large logs or your choice of solid fuel.
Setting the fuel aside for a moment, fully open the primary and secondary air control(refer to your appliances user guide for instructions) and open the stove door.
Place some fire-lighters into your stove and arrange 2 or 3 pieces of kindling on top of them, ensuring that there is a small amount of space between each piece.
Using the long fire-lighter, light the fire-lighters at the back then the front so that they will burn completely and the kindling will have enough flames surrounding it for a fire to start.
Push the door to, but do not fully close it and wait for the fire to take hold. Once this happens, add some large logs or solid fuel to the flames. Do not pack the fuel too tightly, leave some space for air flow. Refer to your appliance user guide to ensure that you do not over-fill your stove.
Wood likes to burn on a flat bed of its own ash with air travelling over the top. Solid fuel needs air flowing above and beneath it for an efficient burn.
Once your fire is established close the door and close the primary air control, leaving the secondary air control/airwash open, again following your appliance user guide.
Put your feet up, top up your fuel as needed and enjoy the view as you get cosy!
