What the 2022 regulations for stoves means for you

There are lots of stories circulating in the news lately about the new legislation for wood-burning stoves in England which comes into force in 2022. But what does it mean for you as a current stove owner? How will it affect you if you want to fit a stove after this date? What are the new regulations for?

The government has pledged to reduce the amount of pollution we create as a country. One way they intend to do this is by making sure people are using energy efficient stoves and burning good quality fuel which is better for the environment and better for your pocket if you own a stove.

What do the regulations say?

The regulations, which come into force in England in 2022, say that any stove manufactured after this date must meet minimum emissions requirements, Stoves must be over a certain level of efficiency, be fitted correctly and perform in a way that is less damaging to the environment.

I already own a stove. Will I have to get a new one?

Not unless you want to! The regulations only affect new installations in England after 2022. I want to buy a stove now, but should I wait until 2022?

There's no need to wait, the regulations will only come into force in 2022 for new stove installations. If you are concerned that you may be missing out on the latest Stove technology then fear not, stove manufacturers have known about these regulations for years and there are already lots of stoves available to buy now that meet and exceed these requirements. What if I buy a stove that is not compliant before or after 2022?

Stoves that are purchased before the new regulations come into effect are exempt from the new legislation, although, as mentioned, many companies have been aiming to meet or exceed these standards since the legislation was made available. Stoves purchased from a reputable dealer, such as North Wales Stoves, after the 2022 regulations come into place will always be compliant with the new Ecodesign regulations.

What will be the restrictions on fuel?

When you are purchasing fuel for your appliance, it is important that you check that it complies with the current, legal legislation and is also the correct fuel for your appliance. Wood can only be burned if it has a moisture content of less than 20% and is being burned in an appliance that has been approved by Defra. In addition, you should also look out for the 'ready to burn' logo when purchasing your fuel. Smokeless fuels and biomass products must also be approved before you can use them in your appliance.

Will I still be able to burn logs that I chop myself?

There is not currently anything in the released legislation to suggest that you will be unable to burn your own logs. However, there are some steps you should take to ensure that the wood has been dried for a suitable length of time so that it is appropriate and safe before you use it to heat your home.
